General Introduction to Scientific Research of GMU

GMU consists of 8 research institutes, namely, Institute of Respiratory Diseases, Venom Research Institute, Institute of Neuroscience, Institute for Chemical Carcinogenesis, Cancer Research Institute, Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences, Institute of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Institute of Cardiovascular Disease. GMU is also home to Ethics Research Centre of Guangdong Province and Guangdong Endoscope Surgical Research and Development Center. Laboratory of Institute of Respiratory Diseases was built as a state key laboratory in 2007 and later passed the acceptance test in 2010. This rewrote the history that there was no state key laboratory among local universities in Guangdong Province before. Right now, GMU owns 1 state key laboratory, 1 key laboratory co-built by MOE and Guangdong Province, 4 key laboratories at provincial level, 9 key laboratories at municipal level and 1 municipal key research base of Humanities and Social Sciences. In 2010, GMU was approved to set up the Guangdong Provincial Research and Development Centre for Respiratory Medical Engineering Technology.

In 2007, the internal medicine (respiratory diseases) passed the assessment of national key disciplines organized by Ministry of Education and was re-elected as the national key discipline with the highest score among similar disciplines. In the same year, in the eighth round assessment of key disciplines in Guangdong Province, 7 secondary disciplines of GMU were selected as key disciplines, which ranked top of similar universities. In 2010, respiratory internal medicine entered the national ¡°key discipline of characteristics project¡±. Currently, GMU has 35 key disciplines of various types at different levels, including 1 national key discipline: internal medicine (respiratory diseases), 7 Guangdong provincial key disciplines: internal medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, clinical laboratory diagnostics, neurology and toxicology; 10 Guangzhou municipal key disciplines: internal medicine, public health, toxicology, neurology, pharmacology, pathology and pathophysiology, imaging and nuclear medicine, urology, thoracic heart surgery, pediatrics and ethics; 13 key disciplines at university level: the Integrative Medicine, molecular biology, pathology, biochemistry, anthropotomy and anatomy, emergency medicine, pathophysiology, hemooncology, pharmacology, hematology, oncology, obstetrics and gynecology, orthopedics. A discipline system at four levels: national, provincial, municipal and intra-university levels has been initially constructed. GMU is authorized to confer master¡¯s degree in 1 primary discipline, master¡¯s degree in 27 secondary disciplines, and doctor degree in 1 secondary discipline. It also offers post-doctoral training in 1 primary discipline (clinical medicine).

Since last five year Plan (2006-2010), Guangzhou Medical University (GMU) has taken initiatives to encourage scientific research, which has led to remarkable outcomes, landmark achievements and steady expansion of overall scope of scientific research development. GMU has been granted more than 1,000 scientific research projects above municipal level, including a National 973 Programme (comprising major international scientific programs) (as chief scientist unit), 4 projects sponsored by National 863 Programme, 98 Chinese National Natural Science Foundation projects and 1 innovative team project of ¡°Yangtze River Scholar and Innovative Team Development Programme¡±. During the period of last five year Plan, GMU has been granted the innovative team project of Guangdong Natural Science Foundation again and received up to RMB 180, 000, 000 as scientific research funds from the government. Among 4,000 papers published, 141 were collected by SCI journals like Lancet and Nature. In 2008, one paper of GMU won highest votes to be one of the most outstanding papers of Lancet. Thirty-four scientific research outcomes won awards above municipal level, including 1 project at national level and 4 projects at provincial level. Besides, 32 patents have been authorized.
